The American Friends of Chimes Israel (AFOCI) continued their successful start with two events in the Atlanta area during December, 2009. AFOCI is a dynamic group of individuals who are committed to supporting the humanitarian and educational mission of Chimes Israel, a nonprofit organization that works to improve the lives of people with special needs in Israel.

Edwin and Louise Rothberg graciously hosted a parlor meeting in their home on the evening of December 13, 2009. Sammy Rosenberg, from the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta's Blonder Family Department for Developmental Disabilities introduced Evan Wertheim, the representative from Chimes Israel as the speaker. Despite rainy and cold weather, more than 30 attended the event, donating over $2,500.

Thirty-five Young Professionals gathered on December 16, 2009 at Eclipse di Luna for an evening of tasty tapas and Chanukah candle lighting to learn more about Chimes Israel's work with people with disabilities. In addition to raising hundreds of dollars in donations, participants volunteered to become active members of AFOCI, including redesigning the website, promoting events, and seeking partnerships.

In February, AFOCI will focus on Jewish Disability Awareness Month. Evan Wertheim will speak at Temple Emanu-El, Temple Sinai and Ahavath Achim Synagogue in Atlanta. Additionally, AFOCI will host parlor meetings in Atlanta, Columbus, Georgia and Tallahassee, Florida. Chimes Israel's mission is to improve the quality of life of people with special needs in Israel and to assist its clients in reaching their fullest potential, so that each may live the most independent and rewarding life possible. Chimes Israel operates 18 different programs for people from birth through senior citizens without regard to religion, gender, age or ethnicity. Chimes Israel has a strong focus on working with the adult population through sheltered workshops, supported employment, inter-social skills, leisure activities and other programs that are geared towards increasing independent behavior. Additionally, it operates several centers for infants with developmental delays as well as several after-school special education programs for school-aged children. Attention Young Professionals: Please join us for a festive Chanukah Mix and Mingle to Support Chimes Israel, a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving people with special needs in Israel. The event will include a short presentation by Evan Wertheim, the representative from Chimes Israel.

The American Friends of Chimes Israel (AFOCI) got off to a great start with two successful events held in Atlanta, Georgia and Montgomery, Alabama. AFOCI is a dynamic group of individuals who are committed to supporting the humanitarian and educational mission of Chimes Israel. Chimes Israel is a nonprofit organization in Israel that works to improve the lives of people with special needs.

Evan Wertheim, the representative from Chimes Israel, spoke at the inaugural meeting in Atlanta which was held at the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta on September 29, 2009. Dr. Alan Manheim, the founding Executive Director of Chimes Israel was also present to answer the questions of participants and share his experience with the organization. The meeting brought together over twenty people to learn more about the formation of the American support group and begin planning the future of the nonprofit organization, AFOCI. The meeting generated a great deal of enthusiasm and excitement for partnering with an Israeli organization that impacts the lives of people with special needs.

A parlor meeting was held in Montgomery, Alabama at the home of Carol Hart on October 1, 2009. Rabbi Elliot L. Stevens of Temple Beth Or introduced Evan at the meeting. Fifteen people attended the event, donating over $6,500, far surpassing the goal for the evening.

American Friends of Chimes Israel

Shalom and welcome to the home of the American Friends of Chimes Israel. Chimes Israel (צ'יימס ישראל) is one of Israel's leading nonprofit organizations serving people with special needs.

Chimes Israel is one of Israel’s leading nonprofit organizations serving people with special needs. A dynamic and committed group of members of the Atlanta community is organizing the American Friends of Chimes Israel (AFOCI) to support Chimes Israel and help it fulfill its mission. We invite you to join them! Come and learn more about the humanitarian and educational work of Chimes Israel. At the meeting we will discuss the formation of the AFOCI, collaborations with the local community and other exciting ideas. Get involved at the beginning of the founding of this new organization and make a difference in the lives of people with special needs.
